The idea of “CHEN–A Moving Sculpture”

BACK

禮記載:「誠於中,形於外。」「誠」意指由內而外的誠實;
有道是:「言而不成,誠無以立也。」「誠」意謂不誠無物的誠信;
莊子記:「真者,精誠之至也。」「誠」象徵精誠所至、金石為開的誠懇;

Bringing the sculpture around Taiwan like a faithful preacher, TONG turns sincerity into an ethical trend and hopes that people would cherish Chinese characters.

The creation of “CHEN–A Moving Sculpture” The sculpture is composed of five pieces of woods. The “Yeng” in the left is Taiwan Incense Cedar, which bears a stable characteristic and features delicate straight grain and unique scent. The “Chen” in the right is Chinese yew, which bears a vibrant characteristic and has the color of red bean inside and white color outside. The combination displays the interlock of lightness, heaviness, quickness and slowness, as well as the conversation between “Yeng” and “Chen”. A character with space-filling power is created, roaring with sincerity.

The meaning of “CHEN–A Moving Sculpture” The character “CHEN” stands like a mirror, reflecting one’s heart while exposing all dishonesty. Choosing “CHEN” as the topic, the artist shows her sincerity, while hoping that the society is trustworthy, the people have faith and the leaders remain honest.
As it is written Riji, “what truly is within will be manifested without.” “CHEN” refers to the sincerity from one’s heart to one’s behavior.
As it is said, “if one does not stand by his words, trust could not be established.” “CHEN” means being trustworthy is the only way to good.
As it is recorded in Chuang Tzu, “To be genuine is to be extremely persistent and faithful.” “CHEN” represents the faith that could move mountains.
As Liu Hsiang in the Western Han Dynasty uttered, “It is better to be honest than to fake skillfully.” “CHEN” emphasizes on the human’s basic virtue – honesty.

The art of “CHEN–A Moving Sculpture” Getting rid of conventional regulations and structures of characters to create a three-dimensional calligraphy art, discussions on how calligraphy exists beyond writing are raised. Through the construction of “CHEN–A Moving Sculpture” with pieces of woods, ponderations upon intentional creating process behind nature materials are also aroused.
