BACK

The Production of Bamboo Stretcher The bamboo stretcher for drying rice noodles is called Zhú Píng or Zhú Dá in Chinese. It is made of Makino Bamboo, a hard and flexible material that is best for bamboo-weaving. To make a bamboo stretcher, the craftsman would first pick bamboos from mountains, then slice them into pieces after cleaning. Next, proceed into bamboo-weaving. Last, tie two bamboo poles to the bamboo sheet with iron wires. Even a skillful craftsman would have to spend at least three hours on weaving only one bamboo sheet.

The Solo Bamboo Stretcher Craftsman In Northern Taiwan Living in Beipu, the 87-year-old craftsman LI Chien-Hung began making bamboo containers when he was 13 years old. Then he cooperated with rice noodle factories in Hsinchu and started making bamboo stretcher. By word of mouth, even customers from Hualien, Taichung and Chunghwa come for his bamboo stretchers. As many craftsmen passed away, LI Chien-Hung has become the solo bamboo stretcher craftsman in the northern Taiwan.

Succession And Innovation In an era full of plastic products, handicrafts vanish as time goes by. LI Chien-Hung clings to his job because there are still needs. His son, LI Cheng-Chih, motivated by his father's spirit, resigned from his job in Hsinchu Science Park five years ago to success the bamboo-weaving business. As the fourth generation of the family business, LI Cheng-Chih picked up the bamboos that he used to have enough with. Today, aside from making bamboo products, the father and son also create props for movie companies, guiding the bamboo business to a new era, hoping crafts made from natural materials can be more widely seen.
